“Apertures”
Statement
“Apertures” is a site specific installation for Das Schaufenste. I created a vertical drape that covers the gallery’s window front. The lower part of the drape has three horizontal rectangles stretching into the gallery. The interior of the gallery is visible through the rectangles. The word aperture is a synonym to the Hebrew name for female: nekeva, literally meaning an opening / hole.
In my art practice, I’m interested to explores ways in which architecture and communal beliefs function as additional layers of restrictions on the body. An article of clothing may be worn by one person, but the codes that it reinforces suggest the presence of a chorus. I create wearable sculpture garments that contain the materiality of my body in motion.
The body has openings such as mouth, garments covering the body have openings such as sleeves. Rooms have openings such as windows. Curtains cover the windows. For the window of Das Schaufenste, I created a garment trio that functions both as a curtain and as windows/openings.
